Christian Krekels Art Coffee Table in Inlaid Brass and Agate Belgium 1989

€32,700.00

This is a mesmerizingly beautiful coffee table by Belgian artist Christian Krekels.

Quite exceptional in its genre, this coffee table by Christian Krekels shows a wonderful sunburst like pattern of inlaid brass pieces pointing outwards to the edges of the table. This sunburst pattern finds its genesis in a fairly big and beautiful piece of agate. The brass shows a rich gold color and the material gained a very desirable patina over time. The remarkable table top rests on a simple yet elegant black lacquered wooden base. Overall, this table features a painstakingly beautiful and dynamic design which catches the light in a most fascinating way.

Especially in Belgium, during the 1970s and 1980s there was a small selection of artists who made very special high-end tables. Although usable as tables, these were real pieces of art - jewels for the living room. Made by hand in extraordinary materials and sometimes enriched with the most wonderful pieces of gemstone. The best known artists for this particular genre were Ado Chale, Jean-Claude Dresse and Christian Krekels.

Christian Krekels (Brussels, 1942) is a sculptor who was trained as a diamond and gemstone specialist. Later on he worked on sculptures and unique hand made (coffee) tables, like this one. He mostly worked with various metals and - for his more exclusive works - gemstones.

This table comes directly from the first owner and has gained a fantastic patina over time. Of course there is always the possibility to polish the brass to shiny perfection like when it was new - but we really like the way the table looks now after 36 years of use.

Signed ‘Christian Krekels 1989’

Dimensions: W. 100  x D. 100 x H. 34 cm
