De Coene Frères Pair of 'Jeanine' Nightstands in Black Lacquer and Brass Belgium 1930s

€6,800.00

A beautiful pair of black lacquered art deco nightstands / cabinets by De Coene Frères. Kortrijk, Belgium, 1930s.

An elegant pair of Art Deco nightstands by the renowned Belgian furniture manufacturer De Coene Frères, dating from the 1930s. Beautifully proportioned, with gently curved fronts, rounded vertical supports and a deep black lacquered finish with contrasting brass elements.

The brass edges, feet and hardware are wonderful accents against the glossy black surfaces. The doors open to reveal contrasting light wood interiors with shelves.

A stunning pair of cabinets - ideal for the bedroom but also very usable in other environments.

The pair comes in a very good condition with only very slight wear due to age and use - light scratching, swirling and a beautiful patina on the brass.

About De Coene

De Coene - or De Coene Frères / Kortrijkse Kunstwerkstede De Coene - was without any doubt the most important (art deco) furniture workshop in Belgium. After winning the Grand Prix at the famous 1925 ‘l'Exposition des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes’ exhibition in Paris, their name was set as the most important and high quality workshop for furniture and interior design. It was a total workshop where architecture, furniture, textiles, and ornament were conceived as a whole. De Coene also was a very innovative workshop, as Josef de Coene traveled to America in 1921 to purchase one of the earliest machines for creating laminated wood - in an effort to create smoother shapes and better quality furniture.
‍ ‍
Interestingly, after the height of the art deco period and World War II De Coene also became a renowned mid century furniture maker. It is very uncommon to find a manufacturer or workshop that peaks at very different styles and in very different periods in time.

Dimensions: W. 53 x D. 36 x H. 56 cm
