A mahogany empire console table with integrated mirror, most probably Dutch. Early to mid 19th century.
The design is defined by a pair of boldly shaped scroll supports that rise from a sweeping plinth base, their silhouettes repeated in the mirror set within the structure itself. The mirror becomes part of the composition, doubling the curves and creating an unexpected sense of depth and movement. A wonderful visual effect. It's an unusually clever piece of furniture for the time period, the design alone would make it stand out in a room full of ordinary empire consoles.
Restrained yet expressive, the piece shows a strong architectural character. A single drawer is incorporated beneath the top, creating a very practical and versatile piece of furniture.
