Exceptional French Art Deco 'Fer Forgé' Side Table in Hand Wrought Iron with Red Marble 1930s
An exceptional art deco side table in hand wrought and worked iron with a richly figured red and white marble top. Europe, probably France, 1930s.
The sculptural base is entirely composed as a piece of decorative ironwork and shows an intricate arrangement of scrolls, arches and incised elements. Almost every exposed edge has been individually worked with a fine rhythmic chisel decoration, giving the iron a remarkable graphic quality. Also this reveals the considerable handwork involved in its making, a true piece of craftsmanship.
Despite the richness of its ornament, the table retains a light and remarkably open character. The decoration is held within a clear architectural framework and above it sits the circular marble top in red and white marble. The contrast is particularly successful with the natural beauty of the marble set against the disciplined and almost drawn quality of the ironwork.
The table has the intimacy and scale of a small piece of furniture, yet the workmanship and sculptural presence of an object made to be observed from all sides. Overall, a highly individual and rare example of interwar ‘ferronnerie d’art’.
Comes in a very good and highly original condition with slight wear due to age and use, most notably on the marble top - as can be seen in the pictures.
Dimensions: W. 45 x D. 45 x H. 69 cm
