Italian 18th Century Carved Giltwood Center Table with Marble Serpentine Top

€32,500.00

This is a very special and museum worthy 18th century Italian center table in carved and gilded wood with a beautiful serpentine shaped marble top.

It comes straight out of the collection of a renowned museum, so this is a rare opportunity to own what essentially is a museum relic.

Beautiful design and proportions with ‘cabriole’ legs and floral ornamentation.

The highly original frame shows a very desirable wear on the gilded and carved elements. Although very ornamental and quintessentially Rococo this table features a refined and - strangely - subdued charm. Essentially it is a piece true to the wabi sabi philosophy - thanks to the very desirable patina and wear due to more than 300 years of use. Placed in the right context, this table suddenly becomes timeless and subtle.

In practical sense it is also very usable in a modern interior due to the fact this is a center table - most of the tables in this style were console tables which have to be used against a wall. This could be a center table in a hall, a side table or even a coffee table.

It comes in a highly original condition showing a great patina and wear on the frame with visible signs of age - some repairs and with the ‘gesso’ plaster layer visible in some smaller patches. Overall the condition is very original and wonderful, as can be seen in the photos.

Dimensions: W. 122  x D. 72 x H. 64 cm
