Mary Magdalene in Polychromed Carved Walnut 16th Century
Devotional figure in carved wood, depicting Mary Magdalene. Walnut, most probably Flemish and from the 16th century.
It depicts a cloaked female figure - the Virgin Mary - shown in a gesture of prayer or mourning, with the head lowered and hands clasped at the chest. The pose and downward gaze suggest a representation of the ‘Mater Dolorosa’.
The surface bears traces of its original polychromy in red, ochre, blue and gold. The base shows signs of age and possible previous mounting.
Dimensions: W. 9 x D. 8 x H. 27 cm
