A striking avant-garde table lamp in polished aluminium, dating mid 1960s to 1970. The lamp is constructed from a series of thin, precisely cut aluminium sheets, folded and curved around a single exposed light source to create an almost architectural composition. Distinctive and sculptural, it is quite remarkable for achieving such a complex play of form and light from an essentially simple folded-sheet construction.
The three upright aluminium planes function simultaneously as structure and reflector. Each follows a different curve, opening around the bulb and catching its light across the polished surfaces. When illuminated, the metal takes on a warm, almost golden appearance, with the light repeated and fragmented between the individual panels. Unlit, the lamp shows a wonderful austere and sculptural character.
The design belongs to the experimental language of European lighting from the late 1960s and early 1970s, when new approaches to relatively simple industrial materials resulted in objects that increasingly blurred the boundary between functional design and sculpture. Rather than relying on a conventional shade, the construction itself determines how the light is reflected and dispersed.
The aluminium retains an attractive aged surface with fine scratches, oxidation and traces of use, particularly visible across the reflective panels.
