An unusual chair in solid oak, strongly influenced by medieval and early vernacular furniture. Northern Europe, mid 20th century.
The design combines a tall rectangular back with a substantial - chest like - base. The base is constructed with framed and panelled sides and short turned elements to the front and the solid seat is hinged with decorative iron butterfly hinges.
The chair refers to much earlier forms through its construction, proportions and material. The heavy oak, panelled structure and almost severe uprightness recall early chest chairs and simple ecclesiastical or domestic furniture, while the architectural back gives the piece a distinctly 20th century character.
The contrast between the monumental lower body and the exceptionally open back makes the chair particularly architectural. Comfort appears to have been secondary to form, it is rather uncompromisingly upright.
Overall a very distinctive chair with the presence of an occasional or ceremonial chair rather than conventional seating.
