This is a truly wonderful mid century table lamp in beautifully patinated brass and perforated white lacquered metal. France, 1950s.
A very attractive and highly elegant design that shows both classical sophistication and modernistic refinement all in one.
Especially the contrast between materials is particularly successful. Brass fittings meet the much more experimental language of perforated sheet metal, characteristic of progressive French design during the post-war period. The shade filters the light through hundreds of small openings, creating a warm, diffused glow while retaining the graphic quality of the perforated surface. This all closely relates to the ‘Rigitulle’ vocabulary developed by designer Mathieu Matégot in the early 1950s, in which perforated metal was transformed from an industrial material into a light and visually transparent structural surface.
Please note that the lamp is articulated at both the base and shade level, allowing the frame and shade to be adjusted independently and adding a distinctly mechanical quality to the design.
Unusually elegant, this table lamp would be a real jewel on your desk, cabinet or shelf.
Comes in a highly original condition with wear due to age and use - a wonderful patina. Originally - EU - wired.
