Very Large 17th Century Bartmann Jug / Bellarmine Jug German Salt Glazed Stoneware
Substantial - very large in its genre - stoneware jug with applied bearded mask at the neck. A so called ‘bartmann’ / ‘baardman’ of ‘Bellarmine’ jug - made in Germany in the first half of the 17th century. Dating back to early 17th century, this piece of European salt glazed stoneware is around 400 years old. Most probably this jug was made round Cologne or Frechen.
Salt-glazed surface in warm ochre tones with visible craquelure and firing marks. The jug is adorned with beautiful and very detailed stamped decoration.
The neck and handle are lost, leaving a clean break that reveals the body’s thickness.
